Vintage York Pictorial Map Print (1948)

The City of York was drawn by John Pearson Sayer for the July 1948 issue of The Strand Magazine. The original was a folded pictorial map measuring 27 × 20 cm and printed on both sides. The elaborate city map formed the principal sheet; associated cover material and a view of Walmgate Bar appeared on the reverse.

Sayer presents York as an illustrator and storyteller rather than a conventional surveyor—no scale is shown. Streets, railways, parks and the Rivers Ouse and Foss instead provide a framework for dozens of small vignettes, coats of arms and historical annotations. York Minster commands the upper centre, while the medieval bars, St Mary’s Abbey, Clifford’s Tower, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall and other landmarks are woven into the plan alongside residents, trades and episodes from the city’s past.

The pleasure of the map lies in its accumulation of detail. A compass rose anchors the lower half; churches and civic buildings are picked out in black; figures, banners and heraldry punctuate Sayer’s restrained palette of cream, blue, yellow and green. The marginal notes turn the sheet into something between a map, an illustrated history and a magazine feature—an object intended to be unfolded and explored at close quarters.

John Pearson Sayer (1901–1984) was a British artist, illustrator and graphic designer. Before producing his post-war magazine maps, he had developed a distinctive pictographic style through map posters associated with the Great Western Railway. His smaller plans of London and other historic towns were subsequently issued in monthly parts by The Strand Magazine, bringing the same mixture of geography, architecture and anecdote to a popular audience.

As an original document from 1948, some wording and historical claims reflect the sources and conventions of their time. They are preserved here as part of Sayer’s artwork rather than presented as a current guide to York.
